Enershield Air Barriers – Improving Passenger Comfort & Stabilising Internal Temperature

Key Objectives

The Challenge

Belfast International Airport is Northern Ireland’s principal airport and the second largest gateway on the Island of Ireland. High footfall and continuous use of the terminal doors meant it was very difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the terminal building.
The temperature loss was affecting the overall thermal comfort, thus creating associated problems with staff and passengers’ comfort and high erenergy costs.

The Solution

We carried out a detailed site survey and proposed that two Enershield Microshield MCS-48 units over each doorway.
Designed and fitted with two auto-actuators meant that the units only came into operation when the doors were opened.
We recorded the temperature within a one metre range of the entrances and studied both doors, one with the air barrier turned off and the other on. This meant we could draw direct comparison in our results. When the unprotected door opened, there was a sudden thermal exchange and the internal temperature fell to less that 10 degree.

In contrast, the protected doorway, the set point temperature was maintained at over 16 degress with the door open, proving that theair barrier is creating the effective seal across the door was promised.
Additionally, they are also preventing the ingress of smoke, odours and other airborne contaminants, therefore air quality and general cleanliness are the other benefits.
Staff and passengers are finding the terminal more comfortable and as a result ofthe reduction in heat loss, reduced energy consumption has also been realised.

The Result

“The Enershield Air Barrier from CPA has surpassed our expectations and we are more than happy to recommend this technology to any other facilities that suffer from the same issues. We would like to extend our thanks to the CPA teamsfor the excellent quality of their workmanship”
